My Issues with Jehovah’s Witnesses
We would like to thank Lacy Beatty for providing this superb and therapeutic look at many of the issues surrounding Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Jesus regularly and emphatically chastised the Pharisees for adding to what the scriptures had to say, burdening the people, taking things so literally, going above and beyond the written word in the efforts to be sure to not err, for obeying the letter of the law instead of the spirit of the law, and for not showing mercy to the peons (Matt 23). As much as the elders and the Jehovah’s Witness Governing Body like to use the Pharisees as examples of what not to do, they seem to miss the fact that they are exactly like them!
“The truth will set you free” set Christians free from Jewish laws (John 8:32). But we are no longer free when we are then placed under an equal amount of laws as the Jews had! It goes contrary to what Jesus taught. Jesus said “It is in vain that they keep worshipping me, because they teach commands of men as doctrines” (Matt 15:9, 22:37-40).
Why are decisions of the Governing Body (GB) made with two-thirds votes? If they really had God’s Holy Spirit directing their decisions as they claim they do, shouldn’t they always have 100% agreement on votes? And if it is because of human error, how do they know it isn’t the majority who has human error and not the minority? Even the GB is susceptible to peer pressure as they are human. And if they are just even one vote shy of the two-thirds, that means that the majority of the supposed anointed faithful and discreet slave still disagree with the rest of them. Where is the scriptural backing for this?
Is not the GB bloodguilty for the people who died because they were forbidden to get organ transplants for years before there was “new light”? Or those who died when ALL blood products were forbidden? Or those killed for refusing political cards or alternative military service before they changed their minds on the rules?
