The Watchtower’s View: The Mentally Ill and Demon Possession

Jehovah's Witness View of the Mentally IllLet’s see what the Watchtower, dated 15th March 1953, had to say on the subject of the mentally ill being troubled by demon possession. You can view this gem on page 191.

“There is no reason to think that they [demons] cannot possess persons today. This is not to say that ALL those mentally sick are so possessed, for they are not.

Mentally sick persons, however, in their weakened state, may present more vulnerable targets for their assaults and invasions.

Some show evidence of demon possession, whereas others show evidences of merely mental sickness or nervous breakdown.”

I love the way the Faithful and Discreet Slave say things without providing any evidence to support it. What is the mechanism by which a human is possessed? How does it work? Where are the mathematical models and mechanical schematics that demonstrate how such a thing would work? What studies have they carried out to back up their above findings? By what mechanism would a mentally ill person be more susceptible to attack?

When will the Organisation move into the 21st century? Scientific studies have shown that our brain has the capabilities to make us think we can hear and see things that aren’t there. Oh, but wait, are these the same scientists that said Jerusalem wasn’t destroyed in 607 B.C.E.?
